Later in 1980, I happened to be in New York on business and went to meet with Mr. Egan and he was kind enough to show me the raw footage then - to my knowledge, the only people that ever saw it were the people present with me that Saturday afternoon: Chris Dickerson, Wayne Demilia, his then wife Karen. Now at the time he weighed only 197 pounds - I was standing right next to him when he weighed-in - and they measured his waist at 27 inches. If they didn't I just took it and went about my business because I figured those guys did not know what it was like. His huge biceps & great pecs always astounded me. Bodybuilding has always progressed. What kept you in the sport so long? I was smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall based on the way people were acting, that Franco was going to enter and win. The one thing that I will always remember about NABBA was the great integrity with which they conducted themselves. If I could go back in time, those things never would have happened. [ Q ] You had a very long bodybuilding career, from the mid-sixties through to the mid-nineties. I don't see the sport ever-becoming mainstream. Manohar Aich, India's first Mr. Universe, lived to 104, and squatted over 600 lbs. And ever since then the magazines have failed and David Pecker has become about 1.6 billion dollars in debt. Boyer Coe talks about why the 2nd Colorado Experiment failed, why the Nautilus System didn't work for Bodybuilders and how Arthur Jones tried to blame him for it. So I went to the 1967 Mr. America and I decided to take his advice and did not do a chest pose. It always kelp me interested and hitting the gym with more determination. So it was purely genetic. And for any of you older readers seeking inspiration to keep in shape, check out the photos when Coe was at his prime and compare them to how he looked at the 1994 Masters Mr. Olympia. Although his routines changed, Coe was a big believer in warming up. What proportion of them were genetically pre-disposed to heart of kidney problems? He came back in 1994, participating in his last two professional competitions the 1994 and 1995 Masters Olympia, finishing in 3rd, and 10th place consecutively. And after two or three weeks he said, "Forget it, just don't hit the chest pose, it just don't look worth a d@mn, you just don't know how to do it.". Grymkowski is still alive and well afaik. I remember standing there and looking down offstage and the judges are laughing and joking and looking around. I had always continued to train hard, so there was no comeback ever planned. In a span of three years,Boyer won two major titles, including his first national title at the 1966 Teen Mr. America, and the 1968 Junior Mr. USA title, which he won on his 22nd birthday. He began by working out in his garage and exercising in a gym before stepping onto the world stage to win many competitions. I never really paid any attention to anyone backstage, so I can't recall how he or anyone acted. The first time I met Sergio Oliva in person was in 1966 and we competed together in the A.A.U. I always remember Robert Redford asking Robert Duvall's character, "You know, did you ever play baseball?" It was also the first time that Arnold beat Sergio. Rich Piana 2. Similar to Mike Mentzer, Coe was an intellect who studied the anatomy of the body and always looked for new ways to train. He started training where he was born and won Mr. Texas and then Mr. Dallas in 1965, Mr. America in 1969 then NABBA Mr. Universe in 1972, World Cup in 1981 as well as many other top bodybuilding titles. Once people's minds are made up, even if what they believe is wrong and false, if that is what they believe, that is what they will believe to be the truth. In the off-season, Boyer would consume a lot of carbohydrates, which were gradually reduced as he would approach his cutting phases. Everyone my height weighs close to 300 pounds. [ Q ] He did say a short while back that he was training for a movie at the time and decided to take advantage of the shape he had achieved. Is their rate of kidney and heart problems greater/lesser than the general population? But again, who is to say that we would not have used the same thing if they (a wider range of drugs) had been available to us. What was it about your look that the judges liked? Actually Achim was the hardest guy to work with because he wouldn't talk at all. I think the major problem with high intake of steroids is that they also cause changes in heart muscle, which somewhat increases chance of heart problems. Nobody cares about the athletes. Coe set aside his ego and experimented with new training methods to bring his conditioning to higher levels. He won the title just three days before he graduated from high school. Even though he doesnt train with the same intensity as before, he says he still has that burning desire within him; always pushing his physical, and mental limits in the gym. He would be in the gym at 5 am and work to his maximum capacity every workout. Day 8: Rest. Therefore he had to institute testing for steroids and that is why all the guys looked like crap. This included the controversial 1980 Mr. Olympia contest which saw Arnold take home the crown. As with many great bodybuilders, Coe built his foundation with calisthenics. From there on, he progressed into more serious weight training, and later, competing on a bodybuilding stage. But I'm of the opinion that you cannot change people's minds.
